The Replacement
Chapter 3 ended on a wager: the conditions that poured your judgment are conditions, not eras. They were never the property of hospitals or of a pre-AI backlog; they are properties of how work is arranged, which means they can be rebuilt by arrangement, and arranging work is a thing you do for a living. What the old apprenticeship did by accident, you now do on purpose.
This part is the rebuild. The five chapters are not five tips. They are one system, and the order is load-bearing.
Reps come first, because everything stacks on them. You cannot reason your way to judgment about a probabilistic system; you have to live with it until its behavior stops surprising you. Chapter 4 restores the raw material: every ordinary task AI-touched, deliberately, until the surprises run out.
The loop comes second. Chapter 5 inverts the default usage pattern, the one where AI is a faucet and you are the faucet’s customer, into a system you supervise: research that triangulates, one model that drafts, a different model that judges, and you owning the spine and the ship decision. The structure is what converts the reps into education, and it leaves an artifact behind every time.
Model-reading comes third, because the loop has multiple actors in it and you have been treating them as interchangeable. Chapter 6 teaches you to read each one the way a manager reads a new hire: not its performance under instruction, but its default under ambiguity, the personality the persona prompt only borrows. Every upgrade is a personnel change. You will learn to notice.
Configuration comes fourth, because once you can read the actors you can write their onboarding, and writing it forces you to make explicit what good looks like, which most practitioners have never once done. Chapter 7 reframes the configuration file as self-knowledge: the standards you can encode are the standards you have actually articulated.
The check comes last, because none of it counts until you can prove it still works. Chapter 8, already in your hands, is the proficiency regime: confidence is not evidence, so you schedule the evidence.
Each chapter quietly leaves you something to keep. By the end of this book those kept things have a name. For now, build the practice. The credential takes care of itself.
